Yulyana Torres
Candidate for City Council, Providence, RI – Ward 3
Yulyana Torres was born and raised in Providence. Having seen the intersectionality of issues like housing instability and food insecurity in her role as staff attorney for Sojourner House, she is running for the Ward 3 seat on the Providence City Council to protect and advocate for her community. Yulyana has worked with activists and City Councilors to help pass and implement the City’s Green Revolving Fund and Carbon Neutral goals. As City Councilor, Yulyana will focus on expanding renewable energy, establishing new revenue streams for the Green Revolving Fund, improving and expanding public transit services, and ensuring all residents have access to ADA-compliant sidewalks and vibrant green spaces.
Yulyana’s Vision
Safe Mobility & Infrastructure
Invest in North Main Street redesign for wider pedestrian paths and access to the light rail metro connector project
Building more raised crosswalks and ADA-compliant sidewalks
Investing in more protected bike lanes and e-bike and e-scooter stations
Carbon Neutral City
Prioritize more renewable energy projects
Prioritize energy efficiency projects in City schools
Climate Resiliency
Implement a stormwater tax for more green infrastructure revenue
“Our community cares a lot about the global existential threat that is climate change. We have a responsibility as a ward uniquely unified on this topic to be a leader in preventative action. This means we need to create funding sources in the city’s budget that fills in “hot spots” or other amenable locations with renewable energy sources. It means we need to identify and support resiliency projects. And, it means we need to support active and mass transportation to ensure that we are reducing our local and, by consequence, global, carbon emissions.”
