David Morales

Candidate for Mayor, Providence, RI

David Morales is an activist and State Representative now running for Mayor. The child of a single immigrant mom, David was first exposed to the harsh realities of climate change at age 14 while working on farms in the blazing California sun. David studied urban planning with an emphasis on climate resiliency at UC Irvine. He joined the Sunrise Movement during his undergrad and then as a grad student at Brown University. As a State Representative David co-sponsored a bill to begin decarbonizing the private sector.

As Mayor, David will focus on stormwater infrastructure, air quality inspections and enforcement, increased accessibility for public transit, and emissions reductions in public and private buildings.

David’s Vision

Holding Corporate Polluters Accountable

  • Establish a Port of Providence Air Quality Monitoring & Enforcement Partnership to strengthen environmental monitoring and enforcement near industrial corridors

  • Increasing the Commercial Tax Rate to 3.5% for Industrial Businesses near the Waterfront

Transit & Mobility

  • Raised crosswalks near schools, parks, rec centers, and high-traffic corridors for pedestrian safety

  • Making sure that all bus stops have a canopy, comfortable seating, and local art

  • Enter a partnership with Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RPTA) to provide free and universal bus rides for PPSD students

  • Creating more protected bike lanes

  • Improved snowstorm response

“We can’t say that we’re taking environmental justice and climate change seriously if we continue allowing large industrial facilities to pollute the Port of Providence. That ultimately impacts the residents and neighbors across South Providence disproportionately.”
