Dan Totten

Candidate for City Council, Cambridge, MA

Dan is a queer renter and a democratic socialist running to continue Councillor Zondervan’s legacy of progress after six years of public service as his council aide. At city hall, Dan helped research, draft, and build the diverse coalition necessary to pass the Green New Deal for Cambridge, a policy that delivers some of the strongest emission reduction requirements in the country along with a justice component to help low-income residents get well-paying jobs in the emerging green economy. Dan also played a key role in advancing legislation to install protected bike lanes, eliminate all parking minimums, restrict tree cutting on private property, and require green roofs/biosolar on large new development. Dan is a proud member of Boston DSA and the Sunrise Movement as well as a founding member of the Memorial Drive Alliance.

Dan’s Vision

Reduce Emissions from Transit

  • Establish a local fare-free on-demand transit option

  • Reallocate road space

  • Implement protected bike lanes

  • Reduce parking maximums for new development of all

    kinds

  • Equitably raise parking permit fees.

Reduce Emissions from Solid Waste Disposal

  • Build on innovative programs such as citywide composting and free mattress recycling.

  • Start a program to divert carpets as soon as possible

  • Push for more progress from the Recycling Advisory Committee on the concept of a ban on single-use plastics.

  • Add the smaller buildings that are not covered by the Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance (BEUDO).

  • In accordance with the Net Zero Action Plan, prioritize the custom retrofit program via the partnership between Electrify Cambridge and BlocPower

  • Ensure the rollout goes as planned.

  • Iron out detailed regulations

  • Appoint a review board to adjudicate reduction plans.

  • Ensure the timely and effective implementation of the Green Jobs Ordinance
