Chelsea Villalba
Candidate for Common Council, Kingston, NY
Chelsea is a dedicated community organizer, social worker, and climate advocate running to serve on the Common Council in Kingston, NY. Born to Ecuadorian immigrants and a member of the city’s mutual aid and zero-waste networks, Chelsea’s has a bold and community-centered vision for Kingston.
Chelsea engaged in nonviolent direct action in 2023 at the Federal Reserve in NYC to demand financial regulators take action on climate. They have been a vocal advocate at city council meetings since they were 12 years old. They bring a unique lens that connects climate action to housing justice, public health, and racial equity. If elected, Chelsea will fight for safer streets with protected bike lanes and better bus routes, expand curbside composting and clean water initiatives, and ensure that low-income renters can access energy-efficient housing.
Chelsea’s Vision
Safe, Smart & Environmentally Sustainable Transit
Every pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle user should arrive at their destination safely. I will fight for cost-effective, common sense, climate resilient solutions to address traffic violence.
I will collaborate with neighbors, climate experts and city workers to envision and implement transportation options that have the least carbon impact possible.
Climate Resilient Infrastructure
Clean water is a right for all. I will find ways to address the city’s lead water pipe problem without disproportionally burdening tax payers.
Healthy waste and stormwater infrastructure is critical for a healthy city. I will work with experts to pinpoint problem areas and develop plans to ensure viable underground infrastructure for years to come.
“Extreme weather events continue to impact our lives and infrastructure in significant ways, making it now more important than ever to make wise choices that reduce emissions and create resiliency. If elected, I will advocate for the expansion of accessible, carbon-free public transportation, the safety of all road users, and climate-resilient water and waste management systems. It's the intergenerational families of Ward 1 on their way to the park laying the groundwork for a more walkable Kingston—I'm running to support their public health and futures.”
