Athena Aguiar

Candidate for City Council, Eugene, OR

Athena is a biologist and activist running to serve on Eugene's City Council. She's worked in ecological restoration (removing invasive plants and raising/planting native plants), and canvassed for Environment Oregon and OSPIRG to help get climate bills passed at the state level.

If elected, Athena plans to accelerate the electrification of buildings, expand rapid bus transit, and hold their region's electric and gas utility accountable.

Athena’s Vision

Safety

  • Fully fund public safety programs such as CAHOOTS (Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets) to ensure that members of our community have accessible care in case of a crisis.

  • Fund our public services such as our libraries, parks, and recreational facilities.

  • Increase the amount of protected bike lanes and sidewalks so all Eugenians can be safe when travelling.

  • Reduce pollution in Eugene by reducing industry seats on the toxics board, supporting electrification of new buildings, and working to reduce carbon transport emissions.

Affordability

  • Support new housing in Eugene, especially low- and middle-income housing.

  • Expand Bus Rapid Transit service to increase accessibility and usability.

  • Lower childcare costs by supporting state efforts to create Universal Pre-K and facilitate efforts between businesses and providers to create sponsored programs.

"Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of my generation. The time to address this crisis is NOW. We've seen many leaders at all levels of gov't continue to kick the can down the road; I'm ready to change that and confront this issue head-on with bold policies."
