Vernon is the Climate Justice Program Director of Clean Water Action in Massachusetts. He represents Clean Water in climate justice coalitions. He also helps design and execute campaign plans that build grassroots and political power as well as increase access to clean energy, environmental justice, and energy efficiency.

Prior to his role at Clean Water Action, Vernon was the Program Director of the Communities Responding to Extreme Weather (CREW) program. CREW is a national leader in climate preparedness and works with organizations across the country in helping their communities prepare for extreme weather.

Vernon is running for City Council in Cambridge because he wants to advocate for city policies as Councilor that help prepare residents for extreme weather (flooding, heatwaves, etc.) that impact Cambridge. Vernon supports the need for more protected bike lanes across the city, expanding public transit to include a pilot program that makes transit free for low-income riders, the need for more funding that would make the city’s Blue Bike program free for new users, which could further incentivize more people in the city to use bike share program.

Vernon’s Vision

Eliminate the Use of Fossil Fuels

  • Eradicate the use of fossil fuels in Cambridge

  • Support an immediate ban on fossil fuel infrastructure in all new buildings in Cambridge

Transportation

  • Expand and improve pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in Cambridge

  • Fare-free public transit.

“Climate change is the greatest existential threat to human and other species’ existence. Cambridge is not immune to climate change. This was demonstrated in July 2010 when the city experienced extensive flooding after 3.58 inches of rainfall fell in one hour during a summer storm. Cambridge needs Councilors on the City Council that have a background in climate resiliency work. We need City Councilors who will propose policy orders that will help prepare residents for the threats of the extreme weather the city will experience in the future. I will be a City Councilor that advocates for stronger policies that prepare our community members for extreme weather, especially underserved community members.”
