Ryan Schuchard
Candidate for City Council, Boulder, CO
Ryan Schuchard is running for City Council in Boulder, Colorado. Originally from southern Oregon, Ryan moved to Boulder in 2019 with his wife to raise two small girls where they could live a car-lite lifestyle near the mountains.
Ryan has worked as a professional advocate and advisor for climate action since he was awakened to the crisis as a Peace Corps Volunteer. He has helped to advance a wide range of climate solutions, from business leadership to science communication to technology commercialization. He has started and led movement-building initiatives for climate pioneers Business for Social Responsibility and CALSTART.
He now specializes in the nexus of climate action and transportation equity, a space that holds some of the greatest untapped power for climate solutions that improve people’s lives. Today Ryan runs a small consulting firm, More Mobility, designing programs for transportation climate action.
Ryan has served as an appointed member of Boulder’s Transportation Advisory Board since 2021. His experience with the board has increased his resolve that developing more walkable, bikeable, transit-rich communities is both one of the most powerful climate solutions within close grasp and a way to make peoples’ lives better. He is running for City Council to fight for new possibilities.
Ryan’s Vision
Transportation
Expand transportation mobility options.
Make streets safe to walk and bike, with a priority on safeguarding and enhancing the new bikeway system rolling out that he has helped to start, the Core Arterial Network.
Negotiate the development of a visionary plan to rebuild and then expand fantastic public transit.
Continue to invest in e-bike incentive programs like the one Boulder successfully implemented in July 2023.
Housing and Land Use
Reform zoning and reduce the administrative burden that stands in the way of expanded middle housing, affordable and attainable housing, and rental stock.
Reduce the use of parking minimums and public subsidies for private car parking in general.
Implement land use reforms that bring housing equity, transportation equity, and climate action in closer alignment with one another.
Strategic Investments
Help expand Boulder’s coalitions and initiatives for climate justice.
Provide city staff maximum political support and leverage to structurally drive down greenhouse gas emissions.
Establish a process binding City Council to rigorously identify climate dimensions in its day-to-day business and use every chance to advance the most beneficial climate action.
“One of the fastest paths to just, deep climate action is abundant transportation and housing options. Together they can cheaply eliminate climate pollution, increase community resilience, and make life better for everyone.
Much of the power to do this sits with local governments. We need elected leaders who are willing to stand up against arbitrary restrictions on housing near where people need to go and the continued design of transportation systems around cars — and stand up for a road to happier and healthier possibilities.”
