Marek Broderick
Candidate for City Council, Burlington, VT
Marek Broderick is a student-worker organizer and community activist seeking to flip the Ward 8 city council seat in Burlington. Since moving to Burlington, he has been heavily involved in the labor movement. As the co-chair of the University of Vermont Young Democratic Socialists of America, Marek has facilitated discussions on climate justice and its intersections with the workers’ movement. If elected, Marek wants to spearhead bold initiatives to decarbonize Burlington, create housing available to all, and make Burlington safe and traversable to bus and pedestrian traffic.
Marek’s Vision
Decarbonizing Burlington
Create comprehensive plans to phase out and dismantle pollution infrastructure, such as the McNeil plant, and replace it with clean energy alternatives
Aggressively enforce noncompliance withthe rental weatherization ordinance
Create comprehensive policy requiring large buildings in Burlington to decarbonize as quickly as possible
Creating a Less Car-Reliant City
Increasing housing density and areas of mixed-use development
Properly funding Green Mountain Transport to allow for fare-free travel, increased route frequency, and hire more drivers
Combining lane reductions with creating infrastructure that ensures safe and accessible walking and biking (protected bike lanes, more crosswalk lights, clear/shoveled sidewalks, and more)
"I believe that we can make Burlington a beacon of the decarbonization movement. This requires representatives who have the will to take aggressive and decisive action to put people and the planet over profit. That is what I bring."
