Katie Cashman

Candidate for City Council, Minneapolis, MN

Katie Cashman is a sustainability leader, a renter, and a community organizer, who is running to be the next City Council member to represent Ward 7 in Minneapolis.

Katie has spent her career fighting for environmental justice both in Minnesota and across the world. While working at the United Nations, she focused on helping cities make implementable policies to improve urban health and environmental standards. Currently, she works at the Minnesota Center of Environmental Advocacy, where she works in partnership to uphold the laws and regulations that keep our water and air clean for all. Katie is committed to leading Minneapolis through its green transition to a safer, healthier, more vibrant place to live and work. Katie is running to ensure the city doesn’t fall back into complacency. Minneapolis residents are ready for more equity in policy-making and Katie is ready to deliver.

Katie’s Vision

Clean Energy

  • Navigate opportunities to access federal and state funding for climate action. Increase and provide dedicated climate funding in the city budget. Deliver climate action investments to Ward 7 and the communities that need them most.

  • Expand our renewable energy infrastructure by exploring district geothermal energy, ground-source heat pumps, and advancing distributed solar.

  • Continue to advocate for the accelerated decarbonization of the electricity supplied by Xcel Energy, for a fossil-free future.

  • Reduce vehicle miles traveled and vehicle-related gas emissions through transportation and land use policies, as well as electric transit investments.

Peoples’ Climate and Equity Plan

  • Guarantee carbon-free buildings for all of Minneapolis by 2030.

  • Reduce the racial wealth gap by creating jobs in the growing green economy.

  • Ensure every person has a safe, healthy and climate-resilient neighborhood connected by accessible and carbon-free transportation.

  • Create a dedicated fund to ensure climate justice.

A Resilient City

Buildings Retrofitting & Weatherization

  • Ensure resilience to extreme weather events through stormwater infrastructure and rain gardens, increased tree planting and maintenance, and other municipal programs to improve resiliency.

  • Maximize carbon sequestration in soils, including the use of biochar. Educate residents on the importance of healthy soils in landscaping.

  • Support the Lawns to Legumes program and other pollinator garden initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with regional air quality standards throughout the city through education, air sampling, and data-driven policies.

  • Encourage and pursue opportunities to expand publicly accessible green space through partnerships with neighborhood groups, the Park Board, and building owners.

  • Improve partnerships with Academic institutions developing creative climate solutions.

  • Expand the Green Cost Share Program to fund energy efficiency, solar, pollution reduction, and environmental projects at the neighborhood scale.

  • Pursue building code and other regulatory changes such as a “stretch energy code” for Minneapolis to advance energy efficient design and building operations.

  • Pursue a deep-carbon building retrofit program that eliminates dependency on gas appliances and develop opportunities to retrofit our pipe infrastructure to accommodate networked geothermal energy.

"Minneapolis is positioned to lead the country on climate action. We need climate leaders that can meet people where they are, and communicate the changes we need to make in the clearest way possible, using data, science, and proven technology. Every day on the campaign I am talking to constituents about the opportunities we have to make our city safer and healthier. Public climate leadership means showing constituents that we improve our quality of life when we upgrade our infrastructure for climate resilience."
